Benefits Check List

 

This check-list is intended as a quick guide to help you see which benefits you might be entitled to. It is not a guide to the benefits themselves - you will need to refer to the relevant factsheet for details on the benefit/s that are relevant to you.

Circumstance
Benefit

Incapable of work
* employed

Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)
* after 28 weeks SSP, or not employed Incapacity Benefit
* not enough NI contributions for incapacity benefit, and you're 80% disabled or incapable of work since before the age 20. Severe Disablement Allowance
(As long as it has been paid before April 01)
* if you can't get any of these, or can but still do not have enough to live on Income Support
Unemployed or working less than 16 hrs a week
* payable for 26 weeks if you've paid enough NI contributions;
Contribution-based jobseeker's
allowance (JSA)
* if you've not paid enough NI contributions, or your contribution based Job Seekers Allowance has run out or is not enough to live on: Income-based jobseeker's allowance
* if you don't have to sign on for work (eg you're incapable of work, disabled, a carer, single parent or 60 or over) and any income or savings are low Income support
Working at least 16 hours a week
* you have a child
Working families tax credit
* you have a disability and get a qualifying incapacity or disability benefit Disabled persons tax credit
Disabled due to vaccine damage vaccine damage payment
Help with personal care
* aged 65 or under when you claim
Disability Living Allowance Care Component
* aged 65 or over when you claim

Attendance Allowance
* severely disabled and need help with personal care or household assistance Independent Living Fund
Problems with walking

* aged 65 or under when you claim

Disability Living Allowance
Mobility Component
* hire or buy a car using the mobility component Motability
* if you get higher rate mobility component Road Tax Exemption
* parking concessions Blue Badge scheme
Caring

* you care for a person at least 35 hours a week

Invalid Care Allowance
If you do not have enough to live on

* not working, or working less than 16 hours
- if you have to sign on for work

Income Support

income-based jobseeker's allowance

* working at least 16 hours a week and have a child Working Families Tax Credit
* disabled and working 16 hours or more a week Disabled Persons Tax Credit
* paying rent for your home Housing Benefit
* paying council tax Council Tax Benefit
If you have needs difficult to meet out of regular income

* if you get income support or income-based jobseeker's allowance

social fund community care grant
* if you've had income support or income-based jobseeker's allowance for at least 26 weeks social fund budgeting loan
* following emergency or disaster social fund crisis loan
